Subterrestrial Noise is an immersive audiovisual installation combining AI-generated narrative, subterranean field recordings, and abstract visuals to explore humanity’s entangled relationship with the Earth’s chthonic, or underworld, realms. This multisensory piece uses eight speakers and a projection to create an experience where human and nonhuman entities coexist, dissolve, and reform within the “critical zone” beneath the Earth’s surface. The composition unfolds in three layers: AI-generated text that reinterprets myths of Greek chthonic gods as Earth-based, life-sustaining forces; field recordings from Berlin’s underground that capture human-induced noise pollution; and synthesized grains of subterranean sound that echo the voices of entities beneath the Earth. Through this blend, Subterrestrial Noise reimagines humans as parasitic beings, urging listeners to reflect on their impact on the planet and to reconnect with their own chthonic roots. Visuals generated by AI enhance the experience, zooming in on Earth’s layers and inviting participants to merge with this hidden world.
